A picture might be worth a thousand words, but it can be worth some nice prizes, too.
Punxsutawney Weather Discovery Center board members John Hallman, Jim Cassidy and Howard Beezer, as well as Project Administrator Mary
Jean Johnston, were on hand last Thursday morning to announce the winners of the first-ever Spring Photo Contest and award ribbons and prizes to the winning photographers.
The contest, which was open to any child in grades six, seven or eight, challenged budding photographers to capture a springtime image, such as birds building nests or flowers emerging from the ground, in either digital or film format.
Each entrant was permitted to submit two color images, which were then critiqued on scene choice, composition and originality.
Serving as judges for the task were Vanessa Duncan, owner of Luminess Studio; Sonia Levy, photography student at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh; and Johnston.
Taking home third place honors and a photo-album was seventh-grader Ryan Presloid of Punxsutawney, who captured a close-up of apple blossoms in his gradnfather’s backyard.
For second place, three disposable cameras and a gift card for film developing at Wal-Mart were won by eigth-grader Rebecca Athey of Valier, who waited patiently on her stomach in her neighbor’s yard to get just the right shot of a spring robin.
Adrienne Hess of Punxsutawney, a ninth-grader, grabbed first-place distinction, as well as a digital camera, for the picture she took of her cousin’s dog, Brody, having fun at a Memorial Day party.
The top three photos, as well as two portraits that received honorable mention, will be on display at the center for the remainder of the summer.
The Weather Discovery Center thanks all those who entered the contest. "We had some very nice entries," said Johnston, adding that there will be future photography contests for upcoming seasons.
